    X users have already reported using the new Bitcoin payment feature at coffee shops across the United States. Payment processor Square has launched its Bitcoin payment feature for sellers, allowing them to opt in and accept Bitcoin at checkout through its point-of-sale system. Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Block, which owns Square, said in an X post on Monday that with the new feature, merchants using Square can receive Bitcoin to Bitcoin, Bitcoin to fiat, fiat to Bitcoin or fiat to fiat payments. At the same time, Jacob Szymik, an account executive at Square, stated that Bitcoin (BTC) payments are currently only available for in-person purchases and point-of-sale terminals, but online and invoicing options are “in the works,” and teased that updates would be coming soon.     Jack Dorsey’s payments company, Square, also announced the integration of Bitcoin payment services for businesses on Wednesday. Jack Dorsey, founder of payments company Square, has urged the introduction of a de minimis tax exemption on small Bitcoin (BTC) transactions to help make the cryptocurrency more suitable for everyday payments. “We want Bitcoin to be everyday money ASAP,” Dorsey said on Wednesday, following Square’s integration of Bitcoin payment services for merchants using the company’s checkout and point-of-sale systems. His comments drew attention from Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis, who introduced a de minimis tax provision as part of a standalone crypto tax bill in July, exempting BTC transactions $300 or under from capital gains tax with an annual exemption cap of $5,000.     Thousands of Nepalis turned to Jack Dorsey’s Bluetooth mesh network messaging app in response to the government’s social media ban, which has since been lifted. Over 48,000 Nepalese people downloaded Block CEO Jack Dorsey’s peer-to-peer messaging app, bitchat, amid a series of violent protests over corruption and a short-lived social media ban earlier this week. It followed a similar uptick in downloads in Indonesia last week after corruption-related protests erupted, according to Bitcoin open-source developer “callebtc,” who is working on bitchat. “Last week, we observed a sudden spike in bitchat downloads from Indonesia during nationwide protests. Today we’re seeing an even bigger spike from Nepal during youth protests over government corruption and a social media ban,” callebtc posted to X on Wednesday. Read more

    Block’s inclusion in the S&P 500 comes just two months after crypto exchange Coinbase made history as the first cryptocurrency firm to join the index. Jack Dorsey’s financial services company, Block, Inc., surged almost 9% in after-hours trading on Friday following the news that it will be added to the S&P 500, the benchmark index of the 500 largest US companies by market capitalization. Block will replace US energy company Hess Corp on the S&P 500 before trading commences on Wednesday, according to a statement on Friday. The announcement triggered a strong reaction from the Bitcoin (BTC) community, given the firm’s advocacy for Bitcoin and its strategy for holding Bitcoin as part of its treasury.     Block CEO Jack Dorsey has released a white paper and launched a beta for Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app using Bluetooth mesh networks for internet-free, encrypted communication. Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched the beta version of a new decentralized peer-to-peer messaging service that runs entirely over Bluetooth.  Jack Dorsey said his weekend was spent learning about “Bluetooth mesh networks, relays, store and forward models, message encryption models, and a few other things” as he introduced Bitchat on X on Sunday.  The “Bluetooth mesh chat” system has “IRC [Internet Relay Chat] vibes,” Dorsey added, harking back to the early days of web-based messaging systems in the late 1990s.  Read more
