Water officials on Tuesday reported a high flood in the Indus River at Sukkur and Guddu barrages, while Kotri Barrage is currently experiencing a low flood.

The water level in the Indus River is gradually receding at Guddu Barrage but continues to rise at Sukkur Barrage, according to the barrage control room on Monday.

A girl was rescued by locals while two were still missing after falling into the Indus River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district on Thursday, according to the police. Puran Circle Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Usman Munir told Dawn.com: “The young girls had gone to the river to fetch water for domestic use, but suddenly, due to the fast flow of the river, the sand and mud collapsed and swept them away,” adding that the incident occurred in the Kamach area. He said one of the girls was rescued by some residents present at the river’s bank in the area. The SDPO said a search operation was launched in the area by Rescue 1122, but the flow of water in the river was too high. Ibadullah Khan, a local activist, said that there was no Rescue 1122 outpost in the area. “Locals had no alternative source of potable water but to fetch it from the river and such accidents were common in the area”, he said. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab on Monday issued a flood alert for Taunsa Barrage on the Indus River as water levels continue to rise, creating a moderate flood situation.

The Sindh Irrigation Department reported on Sunday that water levels in the Indus River have continued to rise, particularly at Guddu Barrage, where an increase of 24,000 cusecs was recorded over the past 24 hours.

Seven people were rescued while two went missing after a boat sank in the Indus River near Kohat on Wednesday, according to Rescue 1122 officials. A spokesperson for KP Rescue 1122 Bilal Ahmad Faizi said, “A boat sank at Khushalgarh on the Indus River. Seven passengers were rescued with the help of local divers, while a search operation is underway to search for two missing people.” Teams from Kohat, Nowshera, and Karak are participating in the search operation, led by Kohat District Emergency Officer Arif Khattak, Rescue 1122 added. Earlier in May, as many as four people, including two siblings, drowned in the Indus River in two different incidents in Attock, police and rescue sources had said. Last year in April, eight people drowned when a boat capsized in the Indus River near Kund Park in Nowshera district.
