  • Power Division seeks World Bank support for new power tariff structure for industrial consumers
    Dawn - 08:26 Apr 02, 2026
ISLAMABAD: The government is preparing a new power tariff structure to encourage industrial consumers to maximise their operations during the daytime and minimise them during peak consumption hours in the evening. Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Leghari discussed the concept with World Bank Country Director Bolormaa Amgaabazar on Thursday. The minister said that electricity consumption in Pakistan has been steadily increasing, reflecting the success of the government’s policies. He further said that the government is aiming to make electricity tariffs competitive so that key economic sectors can benefit. He informed the World Bank country director that the Power Division, after assessing concessional tariffs, is currently working on Time of Use (ToU) proposals to further enhance the country’s energy competitiveness. Leghari noted that the aim is to leverage Pakistan’s solar potential while providing concessional tariffs to industries. He added that the Power Division is currently consulting all ...
  • PM Shehbaz takes notice of new Nepra rules for solar consumers, directs Power Division to file review appeal
    Dawn - 11:59 Feb 11, 2026
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday took notice of the recent changes made by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) regarding solar consumers and directed the Power Division to file a review appeal against it. The power regulator on Monday changed the terms of contracts for all existing and future net-metered solar consumers — known as prosumers — to contain rising solar energy penetration and protect an expensive and inefficient state-owned power network. The notification effectively terminated the existing net-metering regime and replaced it with net-billing for all. A statement from the PM Office (PMO) issued today said the premier had taken “immediate notice” of the matter. The development follows outcry from senators across the political spectrum, including the ruling ally, the PPP, and the opposition, the PTI, in opposition to the NEPRA move. The PMO quoted the prime minister as directing the Power Division to immediately file a review appeal before Nepra “to ensure ...

The Ministry of Energy (Power Division) on Friday announced the large-scale rollout of smart meters across electricity distribution companies (Discos) in the country, which it described as a “major step” towards improving customer service and operational efficiency. According to the spokesperson of the Power Division, Zafaryab Khan, metering plays a vital role as the key interface between the customer and the service provider. “In line with the ministry’s declaration of 2025-26 as the Year of Customer Service Improvement, Discos have embarked on a comprehensive digitalisation drive to modernise their infrastructure,” said a statement by the Power Division. “This initiative aims to ensure real-time data availability, transparency, and enhanced customer experience.” Recognising that the pricing of smart meters was a major impediment in this transformation, the Power Division actively intervened to rationalise costs, said the statement, adding that out of nearly 38 million electricity consumers nationwide, aroun...
